Beautiful Rural Routes

My life is pretty hectic these days, being a busy event coordinator gearing up for a summer season, and one of my favorite ways to relax is to ride my bike through the countryside, taking in the sights and smells of rural lands. That's why I love Reach the Beach.

This spectacular ride is an opportunity to explore some of the most gorgeous areas of Oregon - without really lifting a finger. I mean, you do have to pedal your bike, there is no one to do that for you, but you don't have to worry about choosing a route, packing or planning food, etc. The well-planned course has rest stops every 12 miles or so, and the food on course is delish. Online registration closes on the 13th and after that date you can register at the start line on May 17th. There are five courses of varying distances.

RELAX! Enjoy the ride!

The Best Worst Day!

It's the end of a long, rewarding day - but I'm just stopping in quickly to report that today's Worst Day of the Year Ride was the best it has ever been. Sure, it rained a little in the morning, but that was at about 6:00am, well before riders started queuing up. So as for that record of sunny skies every year except a little rain at the end for the course last year? It held true! The sun came out during the finish line just as everyone was enjoying 100% scrumptious chili and potato corn chowder provided by Laughing Planet. Seriously, I've never tasted bike ride food like that before (except maybe the gourmet finish line at the Portland Century, but that ride is in a league of it's own).

Over 2,000 riders showed up, cruised the city streets, drank hot drinks along the way and, perhaps most importantly, strutted their stuff in outrageous costumes. Maybe the exclusively-designed limited edition Worst Day of the Year Ride reflector from Fun Reflectors, a prize for costumed riders, was an incentive. But I doubt it. These gussied up folks were in it to win it - prizes or not.

What's that? You didn't make it out there for the ride today? You're crazy. You must go next year. You must.

Photos and more info to come.

The Hottest Worst Day

The Worst Day of the Year Ride is sold out! Last year there were 1,500 riders and this year they capped the ride at 2,000 riders. The event it not until this Sunday, but last night at midnight they hit that 2,000 mark.

Congratulations to those of you who are going on this incredible wintertime adventure! Be sure to write back to us and let us know how it goes. We want to hear all about that yummy food, especially the finish line by Laughing Planet Cafe. I heard they've been hard at work in their kitchen all week preparing the made-from-scratch soup and chili for the masses.

So if the ride is full up how do you still get in? There are a limited number of volunteer positions available. See the website for details.

Sunday's Weather Report

This Sunday is the Worst Day of the Year Ride in Portland. Will we actually see the worst weather? Uhhh, I doubt it. Though the ride was formed around the actual worst day of the year in Oregon weather, the past six rides have been graced with sunny skies and mild weather. It is sort of looking like this year might be no different (predictions of only a 30% chance of rain and 50 degrees).

The ride is almost sold out and online registration closes tonight. If online registration does not sell out, registration will also be available at Packet Pickup Saturday (4-7 at Lucky Lab on Hawthorne) or at the start line.
>> REGISTER NOW

So what happened when the organizers decided to start the Worst Day's sister ride, the Hottest Day of the Year Ride? Yup, you guessed it, cold weather and pouring down rain - in early August. Go figure.

Are you riding this Sunday? What are you most looking forward to?

NAHBS Brings on the Fun

This weekend is the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, a touring show that visits a different city every year. Portland is hell-bent on ensuring the out-of-towners see the very best that Portland has to offer so on top of the convention's after-parties, Portlanders have organized additional activities. The most comprehensive list of what's happening when during this jam-packed weekend is on the BikePortland.org website. See details here.

There will be workshops for builders, casual riders and competitive riders. Maybe you want to catch the alley cat on Saturday. Maybe you're riding the not-to-be-missed Worst Day of the Year Ride on Sunday. Or you can just spend all day geeking out and freaking out on some of the world's most beautifully-constructed bikes. See? Plenty to do.

You can read more about NAHBS in the most recent ORbike newsletter. By the way, if you're not receiving our newsletter, you should be. Sign up through the front page of our website.

Rider Profile: Gus Fant

Gus Fant is riding in the Worst Day of the Year Ride, but says that a little rain won't scare him off. "I ride in the rain," he says, " because if you don't you won't get much riding in." And Gus knows all about getting riding in - he usually clocks about 3,000 miles per year, and aims for 4,000.

Still, it's no small feat for Gus to be riding in the Worst Day of the Year Ride. This 65 year old is a member of the Tacoma Wheelmen Bicycle Club and he'll be coming down from Tacoma for the ride. Several of the other club members will also be riding.

Gus is a veteran Worst Day of the Year Rider: he has been on five rides. So why does he love it? "It is probably the most social ride I experience during the year," he says. "With the frequent stops on the Worst Day of the Year Ride find it rather relaxing to just take my time and enjoy the ride and visit with riders. Also I take pleasure in supporting the Community Cycling Center as I strongly believe in what they are all about."

One of his favorite aspects of the ride is seeing parents and kids riding together. "I also enjoy seeing other beginning cyclists who express their doubts about completing the ride at the start and then when you see them at the finish line the joy they show from completing the ride."

Speaking of the finish line, what's it gonna be for Gus with he hits those yummy Laughing Planet Cafe soup options? "I'm just not sure although I'm kind of partial towards chili."

Registration closes at midnight on February 7th but the ride will sell out at 2,000 riders. Don't miss out, sign up now!

Worst?? Day of the Year Ride

It's really cold out this morning, which has us thinking a lot about the Worst Day of the Year Ride, the annual benefit for the Community Cycling Center. Did you know that in the six years of the ride, it has never rained once? Well, last year there was a little sprinkle at the end, but other than that the quirky, urban, February ride has been graced with sunny, warm skies every year.

You'll be kept warm and comfy at every turn with tons of belly-nourishing treats including hot cocoa, doughnuts, fruit, DragonFly chai tea, Nossa Familia coffee, bagels, hot cider and much more. The finish line meal is presented by Laughing Planet Café, experts in wholesome yumminess, and features local, sustainable and organic soups and fresh focaccia bread.

Want more of a challenge? The optional 40-mile route loop traverses the west hills out to Hillsboro.

Cycle Oregon Kick Off Party

Every year, riders flock to this event where one of Portland's best kept secrets is finally revealed: the new Cycle Oregon route. It's a chance to see cycling friends who have been hibernating through the winter and find out who's going on the ride this year. The party also marks the opening of registration for the ride.

This free gala event is a perfect opportunity to rub elbows with scores of enthusiastic cyclists who are amped up for another great year of experiencing Oregon's bounty. You pedal; they'll take care of everything else. Beautiful campsites, gourmet food, hot showers, massage, cold microbrew, Oregon wine, live entertainment and a fully supported route. Head out to the Tiger Woods Center at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton on January 31st to see what all the fuss is rightly about.

MMMM, Pedal-Powered Smoothies

Kyr Westwind is the mastermind behind Sprocket Smoothies, a pedal-powered mobile smoothie production, and this Sunday she's bringing her set up to Bike to the Future. Kyr has a Miyata modified with an Extracycle extension. Anyone can pedal to make the smooties, and Kyr is always willing to step in if need be, but this weekend Sprocket Smoothies will be powered by the students of Sunnyside Environmental School. During the school day, these students spend time learning about environmental practices and working on projects such as school gardens, composting and a solar fountain. And they love the idea of making yummy peach and yogurt smoothies while riding a bike.

Register for Bike to the Future online before Friday at midnight and you'll save $10, or you can register at the start line on the morning of the ride.

Portland Century: Portland's Premier Cycling Event

The lines... very short. The course... beautiful and well marked. The finish line dinner... plentiful and delicious. The Portland Century, the ride that was overwhelmed with cyclists last year, was this year well prepared. The Portland Century stood tall this year and presented itself as Portland's much-needed premier cycling event. "My only comment," said weatherman Dave Salesky, "is don't change a thing."

I know many of you were waiting with baited breath to hear the outcome of this year's ride, and the overwhelming response from riders was that they absolutely loved it. Coming soon: a photo gallery and more response from riders.

Did you ride? What did you think?

Rider Profile: Jaskirat Wild // 100

Jaskirat Wild is one of the most enthusiastic Portland Century riders. "I'm super- excited about the ride!" she says. "Thanks to the people who are putting this on!" Jaskirat is looking forward to biking further than she ever has before. She has been a vegetarian for 17 years, but says "I'm excited for the dinner and I'm actually going to try the salmon."

On a normal day, Jaskirat rides about 10 miles on her commute from NE Portland to OHSU where she's a neuroscientist. "I study how meditation affects the brain, and how it can be used to reduce stress."

Jaskirat is a big fan of Portland. "I love how people are committed to all things local, and really support small business and farming."

Rider Profile: Stasia Honnold // 100

Car-free cyclist ("Have never owned one, never will," she says) Stasia Honnold is one of the brave souls who has signed up for the full century on the Portland Century, but she's not intimidated by all those miles. "I end up bike commuting anywhere from 20-40 miles a day, depending on how many stops and random side trips I take, so if I'm going to do a recreational ride I basically want to go as far as possible to make it interesting. I also did the 100 miles last year and it rocked. There's nothing like a hundred miles to make you feel like you really earned the post-ride dinner!"

Stasia, a seventh grade English teacher, is exited to return her second Portland Century. "My favorite part of these rides is meeting all the other awesome people out there. I love to find people going my pace. There's something about the fact that you're both biking that makes it easier than ever to strike up a conversation with a stranger."

Stasia says her favorite place to take a long ride is the Gorge, and last weekend she tackled Larch Mountain. She also loves riding through Riverview Cemetery, on the 205 path to Marine Drive and through Washington Park. "But really," she say, "as long as I'm on a bike I'm happy."

Stasia likes that the Portland Century is all about Portland. "I really, really, really like how normal it is to bike here, and how easy. I love that I can tell people I don't have a car and they think it's admirable, not absolutely crazy. I love Portland's continuous work to make the city accessible by and safe for alternative transportation, whether it's bike, bus, max, whatever. And unrelatedly, I love how people care about things being local and organic. Yay for conscious living!"

If you're not yet signed up, you can still sign up online, at Saturday's pre-ride check in, or at the event on Sunday. For more info, see the Portland Century website.

Rider Profile: Char Rowe // 25

Char Rowe, a 32-year-old native Oregonian, is one of the hundreds of people participating in the Portland Century. "I only recently discovered how much fun bike riding is," she says. "So I'm riding the 25 mile Portland Century this year to explore more bike friendly paths in the Portland area."

But last weekend Char and a friend went out for a distance ride to see how she could handle it, and she's considering an upgrade to the 50 mile route.

Char is excited to be a part of the event. "I look forward to seeing the city and surrounding neighborhoods from a different perspective."

Char represents the diversity of Portland Century riders, she's not hardcore. "I would classify myself as a vacation/seasonal bike rider, but I hope to finish this year's 25 mile ride knowing I will sign up for the 50 mile next year."

Char has lived in Portland for the last three years and views biking as an integral part of its culture. "I like the appreciation of healthy and sustainable lifestyles."

Good luck out there, Char!

Portland Century - The Full Century

I don't know what it is about centuries, but there's something very rewarding about completing a full 100 miles. It's a nice, round number; a solid benchmark. On the Portland Century, there are three routes, 25, 50 and 100, but it is the full century that affords you the greatest views, most spectacular route and gorgeous scenery.

But all that beauty comes at a small price:

climbing. It's hard to get in a nice 100 mile route without at least a little climbing. And on this route, it's well worth it. You'll wind against tree farms on some of the most quiet rural routes, along fern-lined wooded roads, capture startling views of Mt. Hood, dip into Eagle Fern Park, climb up to Roslyn Lake on more rural roads, and eventually cruise alongside the Columbia River on Marine Drive back into Portland.

You can view the entire route, and the elevation profile, here.

This is an ORbike Member Event. If you're an ORbike member, you'll get a discount on registration and a free massage at the finish line.

Hottest Day Ride Attempts Largest Water Fight

Hop on your bike, ride with friends, eat some snacks along the way, but hurry back to the finish line because that's where all the action is, or so it seems (the ride is pretty great too). The Hottest Day of the Year Ride is a benefit for the Community Cycling Center and the organizers are going for the largest water fight on record. There will be free squirt guns (no outside guns or soakers allowed) and plenty of room outside the Lucky Lab on Quimby. There is a also a "No Squirt" zone of people who are grouches - or just don't want to get wet. The record is 1,120 and last year they had 900.

The finish line also features a make-your-own sundae station with tons of toppings to make it just right. This fun ride is an easy, flat, urban 15 miles and there is also an extended 40-mile route.

Portland Century

The new Portland Century routes are available! This year's full century is gorgeous. It takes riders out to Gresham and down south of Sandy to Eagle Fern Park. Heading out of the park is where some of the most intense climbing happens, but also some of the best scenery. Highlights of this route include spectacular views of Mt. Hood, fern-lined wooded roads, tree farms, quiet rural roads and plenty of wildlife along the way. I drove through the course and it is simply gorgeous. Elevation maps are not yet up but should be shortly.

This year also features a half century and a quarter century. All routes have rest stops along the way every 20 miles or less. Some rest stops feature extensive food like Hot Lips Pizza, Laughing Planet Burritos and cool fruit smoothies.

The Night Ride

Hop on your bike and see Portland at night! Sign up today for The Night Ride. This very cool ride is a benefit for the Bicycle Transportation Alliance. Last year's ride was great, and this year there are even more cool elements. The highlight of this year is the special rare screening of bike-themed film shorts from the Filmed by Bike film fest. This festival happens every April in Portland and submissions come from around the world. But it is not shown anywhere else around here nd it is not shown at other times of the year... until now. Get ready for some really cool movies and fresh popped-on-site popcorn. You'll be watching in an outdoor setting with a huge screen. It sounds like it will be a very cool set up.

The route is 15 flat miles, and an opportunity for nighttime indulgances like the all-you-can-eat finish line doughnut feast. See the website for more info and sign up today. This is an ORbike member event (and we think it's one of the coolest events out there). If you're an ORbike member, you'll get special discounts, giveaways and expedited registration at this event.

The Gorge Ride

Last Memorial Day weekend I rode out along the historic Columbia River Highway to The Dalles and came back on the Washington side. It was awesome. That historic highway has large sections that are for bikers and hikers only and it's just gorgeous.

There's a new organized ride heading out that way, The Gorge Ride on June 16th. Here's what the organizers say, "Starting at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles. This route, with its world-class scenery, will be a combination of historic highway that is open to motor vehicles, with very low traffic, and the HCRH State Trail that is open only to hikers and bicyclists. This will be an out and back route of 38.5 miles and a total elevation gain of 2,974 feet. This ride is supported with water stops, snacks, mechanical support and a SAG wagon." Sounds pretty great!

Rider Profile: The Clydes

Joe and Margene Clyde live on a farm 13 miles outside of Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Joe says he and his wife "ride to eat and eat to ride." Last summer the couple, ages 69 and 67, spent two weeks in Southern France doing 50 and 60 miles a day. Spain was on their list for this summer, but instead they'll be building a house "closer to town" so they can ride more with friends. Joe says they ride year round, "This time of year we are riding 100+ miles a week. Our riding in general we do as part of our healthy lifestyle."

The Clydes are two of the 2,000+ people who will be participating in Reach the Beach this Saturday. They say they like the event "because it is for a great cause, is well supported, has lots of great people to visit with - and it's not a killer ride." They have participated in the ride six times: three along the Salem (80) mile route and three along the Portland (100) route. "We enjoy the whole scene," Joe says, "the ride, the food, the people and the finish with a visit to the Pelican Pub!"

So look for the Clydes out there this Saturday! And let's all cross our fingers that the weather continues to be as great as it has been lately.

Reach the Beach - Take the Ferry!

(Today is the last day to register online, but you can easily register at the event also.)

It's hard to want to write about anything other than Reach the Beach these days. The amazing weather we're having (albeit a little chilly in the morning) makes me think about sunny days spent lounging on the Oregon Coast. Reach the Beach lets you do just that - after a bit of riding.

But the real kicker this year is the FERRY! The southern routes now go over the Wheatland ferry north of Salem. If you like the idea of hopping on a boat for a little rest and a fun ride, you've got two ride options:

the 80 mile route out of Salem or the 110 route out of Corvallis. Reach the Beach has three other routes: 100 miles out of Portland, 55 miles out of Amity and a nice introductory 26 miles out of Grand Ronde.

Online registration closes today, but you can still register at the start line.

Not Scary: Fundraising for a Benefit Ride

Here's a little help for those of you who are riding Reach the Beach. I spoke with Jennifer Baldwin, the fundraising guru at the American Lung Association of Oregon, and she assured me fundraising isn't scary, it's simple. Here are the five tips she suggests that make it quick and easy to qualify for cool fundraising prizes (like the sold-out Cycle Oregon).

* Start by sending an e-mail to all of your friends. Tell them what you're doing and ask for their support.

* Don't be afraid to follow up with people who have said they will donate to your fundraising efforts. A quick reminder e-mail.

* Ask everyone to support your fundraising efforts. You never know who has been affected by lung disease.

* Include pictures: of you on your bike, of your loved one with a
lung disease, of you and your family. This reminds your supporters that it’s an important personal issue.

* Use the online fundraising system. These easy-to-use tools make it a snap to quickly meet - and exceed - your goal.

Rider Profile: Jessica Judah

There are tons of people riding Reach the Beach this year. Jessica Judah, 24, is one of the 1,500 riders who has already signed up. Everyone who rides has a different connection to the event. Some people like the physical challenge. Others like the camaraderie among riders. For Jessica, it goes even deeper. Jessica is participating memory of her grandmother who died of lung cancer. Every one of her pedal strokes will be supporting the American Lung Association of Oregon's efforts to promote clean and prevent lung diseases.

So why is Jessica riding? "First of all...it's for a great cause! Secondly, it sounded like a great event to do with my husband and brother in-law and a great way to stay in shape." Of the six route options, the Jessica, who will be riding for the first time, chose the 100 mile route from Portland. "We chose that distance because we really want to push ourselves. Neither of us have ridden that far in one ride and look forward to the challenge!" But Jessica and her husband average about 50 miles a week and usually go for a longer ride every Sunday.

Larry and his Babe

No really, that's her name - Babe - and she's the reason Larry is here today, riding Reach the Beach. Several years ago, Larry Tanner, from Tillamook, was injured on the job and unable to work for a long period of time. The normally-active guy didn't take well to all this sitting around, and he quickly developed severe depression and an addiction to his pain medication. Larry gained a lot of weight and his life began to spiral our of control.

But Babe, his wife for 40 years, wasn't about to let that happen. Through her love and support, Larry was able to kick his addiction to the pain medication and he started riding his bike for exercise. Before he knew it, he lost over 100 pounds and signed up to ride Reach the Beach.

That was three years ago and Larry has been riding Reach the Beach ever since. Larry's preferred route is the 100 miles from Portland, but this year he is considering the Corvallis Challenge, a new 110 mile route. And his favorite part about the ride? "First of all," Larry says "its a great ride and for a great cause." He also really loves the anticipation and excitement leading up to the start of the big ride day.

And Babe has been there every step of the way. The first year, she rode with Larry. Now she's an equally-helpful contributor to the event as she volunteers at rest stops along the course. Babe says she loves directing traffic and cheering on riders - and seeing Larry cross the finish line.

These days, Larry puts in 100-200 miles of riding a week, and in 2006 he clocked 6,000 miles. He has come a long way from his days of depression, and Reach the Beach has been a big part of his recovery. So look for Larry out there on the ride, and give him high five. Way to go Larry! We'll see you at the beach.

Don't be Afraid to Ask

For most of us, asking for is nervewracking. Even when it's a great cause, like the programs of the American Lung Association of Oregon (ALAO) - programs that save lives, help children run and play and educate people with lung diseases. I mean, when you think about that great work, it shouldn't be so hard to ask for people to give a little to support it.

And yet, for many of us, the mere thought of asking for money makes us clam up and want to crawl in a hole. But there's no reason it should be that way! That's why Jennifer Baldwin of the ALAO is hosting Fundraising 101 for riders of the ALAO's Reach the Beach. Jennifer is the ALAO's Development Director and at the workshop, which is April 16th at REI Downtown, 7pm, she'll share her knowledge from years of fundraising experience. She'll show you how easy it is to raise support for the ride. Jennifer will break it down and give you comfortable, simple-to-use tips and techniques for asking for support from friends, coworkers and family. You'll walk out of there ready to conquer the world... or at least reach that top fundraising prize of a free pass to the sold-out Cycle Oregon ride.

And everyone who attends will be entered into a drawing for a Yakima rooftop bike rack, a $500 value. This is an opportunity you don't want to miss. If you're riding Reach the Beach, we'll see you at REI on the 16th.

Reach the Beach Says, "Hello Corvallis!"

Reach the Beach, well known for its beautiful routes through rural Oregon, continues add new, exciting features every year. This year they've added a Corvallis Challenge, 110 mile route starting from Cheldelin Middle School in Corvallis. This distance route will take you along winding roads through a gorgeous region or Oregon. The quiet rural route will meander through Oregon wine country along the way to Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City where a Finish Line Beach Party, and your pint of Pelican Pub beer, awaits. That's right, a party directly on the beach, as in sink-your-toes-in-the-sand. You're going to love it.

To sign up or for more information on any of the six routes of various lengths, see the Reach the Beach website.

Tons of Good Bikey News

When I went to put the April ORbike newsletter together, I was amazed at how much there was to write about. There is so much going on right now, and we're not even in "the season". You can check out our April newsletter here. And if you're not on our newsletter list, you should be. The newsletter comes out once a month in the off season and twice a month starting in April. It's the best way to be the first to find out about statewide bike events. Sign up on the front page of our website.

Everyone Can Reach the Beach

If you've never ridden to the coast, Reach the Beach is a great way to do it! You can choose a variety of routes, from as few as 26 miles (starting from Grand Ronde) to as many as 110 (Corvallis Challenge). And if you've done this ride or your own ride to the coast before, you know how great the routes and scenery are.

Reach the Beach makes it easy, carefree and fun with yummy food along the way (including a hot lunch and a Deli Sandwich Stop), rest stops nearly every 10 miles, support vehicles to carry your baggage and a fabulous beach party - on the sand, at the Pelican Pub - in Pacific City. When was the last time you sunk your toes in the sand while drinking a pint of beer? That's what I thought. It's been TOO LONG. Sign up for Reach the Beach today and cure those winter blues.

Best Worst Day Ride

The Worst Day of the Year Ride pretty much turned out to the best it has ever been. 1,500 cyclist came out for the day, and the event was sold out. The sun was shining and it was warm, but for about a half our some light rain came down just to remind riders they were in Portland.

Riders were sent out on course with cameras! They got some really fun shots of their friends and other riders, the scenery and the rest stops. Check out the photo gallery and see just how quirky this ride really is. See also the Weather Report, the event ride report and newsletter.

Worst Day of the Year Ride Tip/Fact #4

Unfortunately it is too late to register for the Worst Day of the Year Ride, but for those of you who are registered, here are some fun facts and tips, part of a series I've been running throughout the week.

TIP #4
Bring your camera. There are going to be a lot of fun opportunities to take pictures along the route. And keep an eye out for the Icy Monkey, the event's resident meteorologist. He says he'll be riding in the buff, but then again, he's a monkey so...

FACT #4
At the 2006 Finish Line Party, 100 gallons of soup were served.

Worst Day of the Year Ride

I just spoke with Jim, a Worst Day of the Year Ride rider who is already planning out his costume. He's got an elaborate wig-cape combo planned. Part Halloween costume 2006, part some other costume he found in his basement. Sounds great, Jim! I think this awesome ride is going to be better than ever this year. You don't have to come in costume, but everyone who does is guaranteed to

* Have more fun than non-costumed riders
* Get a free set of Tireflys
* Have a chance to win prizes from Showers Pass and more.

And remember, this ride will sell out so register online or instore in advance.

Worst?? Day of the Year Ride

It has become a great Portland joke: The Worst Day of the Year Ride happens on what should be the worst day of the year, but hasn't been since the ride started. Oh sure, one year there was hail, but that was only after all the riders left - but the cleanup crew was still trying to haul boxes into the trucks. So it's cute, the coincidence that this ride is always on a nice day - but will it happen again this year?

The ride's resident meteorologist, the Icy Monkey, is predicting great weather. He also consulted with the Farmer's Almanac, which forecasts drier but colder weather. I think we'll all just have to head out that day and see for ourselves! But if you're not registered yet, do it right away. The limited 1,500 rider slots are filling up quickly. This event will sell out.

Organized Rides go Holiday

I'm a sucker for the holidays, so it's no surprise I get all excited at the thought of Elliot and company flying across the sky with presents in their baskets instead of ET. That's the redesigned Night Ride logo made special for the holidays. Several of our area's oreganized rides transformed their logos to send out with special volunteer holiday cards.

I mean, come on, a guy holding his bike over his head, wearing a Santa hat, and his wheels are wreaths? That's good stuff. Check out the collection. Click the images for larger versions.

First Day of the Year Ride

Details have just been released for the very first big ride of 2007 - the First Day of the Year Ride (not connected to the Hottest or Worst Day of the Year Rides). This ride is organized by the BTA and meets at Waterfront Park at noon on January 1st. For details, see our calendar.

Speaking of the Worst Day of the Year Ride, the ride is February 11th this year. 1,500 people came out last year to ride on what could have been terrible weather, but wound up being super nice. In fact, there has been good weather for this ride every year. Registration though our website will open later this month.

Pumpkins Mark Your Way

What a fun ride if pumpkins are what mark your route along the way. The Harvest Century, in its third year, is a celebration of the fall season and an opportunity to ride through the countryside. All routes showcase the beauty of Oregon's harvest season, from the crush at local vineyards, to the crunch of fallen leaves under your tires.

Cycle Oregon - An Amazing Journey

While the rain yesterday morning got me moving into the winter season (I pulled out my rain coat!), I couldn't help but wonder what's going on with the folks on Cycle Oregon. I think this great picture taken by Jonathan Maus sums it up so well. Click for a larger version.
