Hottest Day Ride Attempts Largest Water Fight

Hop on your bike, ride with friends, eat some snacks along the way, but hurry back to the finish line because that's where all the action is, or so it seems (the ride is pretty great too). The Hottest Day of the Year Ride is a benefit for the Community Cycling Center and the organizers are going for the largest water fight on record. There will be free squirt guns (no outside guns or soakers allowed) and plenty of room outside the Lucky Lab on Quimby. There is a also a "No Squirt" zone of people who are grouches - or just don't want to get wet. The record is 1,120 and last year they had 900.

The finish line also features a make-your-own sundae station with tons of toppings to make it just right. This fun ride is an easy, flat, urban 15 miles and there is also an extended 40-mile route.

Organized Rides go Holiday

I'm a sucker for the holidays, so it's no surprise I get all excited at the thought of Elliot and company flying across the sky with presents in their baskets instead of ET. That's the redesigned Night Ride logo made special for the holidays. Several of our area's oreganized rides transformed their logos to send out with special volunteer holiday cards.

I mean, come on, a guy holding his bike over his head, wearing a Santa hat, and his wheels are wreaths? That's good stuff. Check out the collection. Click the images for larger versions.

800 Riders - 1,000 Sundaes

The first-ever Hottest Day of the Year Ridewas a sweltering success! 800 riders turned out for a very sunny Sunday afternoon. The route was a hot but rewarding 15 miles around North and NE Portland, with a 40-mile loop route for people who wanted more of a challenge. The ride offered a chance to check out lesser-known routes like Bryant Street (one of my favorite E-W streets to the north), the Going Street bike/ped bridge and Gertz for the 40-milers (a great way to connect to Marine Dr. while the 33rd bridge is down). One rider told the 40-miler was "Just the best circuitous route around Portland."

The water fight was awesome, with riders of all ages squirting each other. There was also a finish line sprinkler to cool riders off as they entered the party. Were you on the ride? What did you think?

Check out these great links, one of which is Jonathan Maus' report and photos posted on BikePortland.org.

Who's Riding on Hot Days?

Do you have to be crazy to sign up for a ride called the Hottest Day of the Year Ride? Well, 1,500 people signed up for the Worst Day of the Year Ride this year, so the hottest has got to be pretty great also right? That's what 29 year old Carrie Bader thinks and she's pumped to ride.

Carrie says, "I always like to take advantage of any good organized outdoor events during the summer - I also don't bike much outside of my usual commute, so it's a chance to get out and try a new route." She says that for sure she's really looking forward to the post-ride water fight and ice cream sundaes.

Carrie's regular riding mostly includes her 10-miles-a-day commute to work or school. This summer she also rode the Tour d'Organics in June on the 30-mile route.

Carrie is one of hundreds of people who are signing up for the Hottest Day of the Year Ride - a benefit for the Community Cycling Center. Tons of volunteers will ensure there aren't long lines - to check in or to make your ice cream sundae at the finish line. If the weather is anything line today, it won't be the hottest, but it will be one of the best days to ride.
