Rider Profile: The Linssens
Urban Assault is a bicycle adventure scavenger hunt full of creative elements. The event has been a hit in other cities so the organizers are putting it on in Portland on May 25th. Barbara and Peter Linssen are just a few of the many people who are signing up to compete as a team. Barbara says they own tons of bikes, and they do all sorts of city fair weather riding, like going to the grocery. While they do have two young kids, Urban Adventure is all about these two adults taking a day off from the kids (Barbara considers it a date).
The adventure course is full of obstacles, which may include adult big wheels, obstacles on foot, scooters, BMX bikes, slip N slides, bouncy balls, ropes, kayaks, balance, or other zaniness. Barbara says she's definitely ready for this challenge, "That sounds like sneaking across my sons room at night. No problem." And she's working hard to get ready for the ride too. She has dusted off the bikes and she's working out, "I've been lifting several pints at the local pub."
Each team chooses a name and the Lissens have dubbed themselves the UGB Lovers - as in Urban Growth Boundary. When asked to justify such a political name, Barbara says it was an obvious choice, "The UGB is what makes the city end and gives you that amazing wildness so close to town. Without the UGB Sauvie Island would not still exist as is does. It's a truly amazing thing." So amazing to Barbara, in fact, that her license plate reads LUV UGB.

Bike to Your Local Earth Day Celebration!
Earth Day is April 22nd so towns and cities around Oregon are hosting community celebrations all weekend long. It was a gigantic Earth Day celebration in Chicago probably around 1989 that got me first inspired to recycle and later to ride a bike. The best way to get to your local celebration is by bike.
Great activities are planned in Salem, Trail, Silverton, Portland and elsewhere. There are too many to mention here, but check with your local environmental organizations or search online.
I spoke with John Mitchell with the Eugene celebration as he was running in and out of last-minute planning meetings. Their festival on the water, he explained, is offering valet bike parking and encouraging all attendees to come by bike. Paul's Bicycle Way of Life, a prominent bike shop in Eugene, is offering free bike tune ups "while they last." So if that's your celebration and your bike could use a little adjusting, this is a great opportunity to get it in tip-top summer shape.
Across the state weather is predicted to be pretty nice, except for those of you at higher elevations who will likely get snow (!!) so head out and enjoy the day! What are you doing for Earth Day?

Reach the Beach
Many of us are draw to Oregon for it's beauty. We enjoy spending time outdoors and exploring what our state has to offer. And for those of us who also love riding our bikes, Reach the Beach is a fabulous way to get out into the countryside and experience Oregon's bounty. If you've ever dreamed of touring Oregon's countryside by bike, this is the best way to do it, with tons of support, yummy food and great routes.
Reach the Beach is the major fundraiser for the American Lung Association of Oregon. Every pedal stroke helps promote clean Oregon air and healthy Oregon lungs. You'll meander along quiet, gorgeous rural roads in search of a spectacular beach party in Pacific City. Register before midnight on April 13th and you'll pay only $25 for the entry fee.
The packet pickup is Sunday, April 27th from 7-9pm at REI in NW Portland. This special night is an opportunity to review the routes, meet other riders, enjoy appetizers, sample treats and learn more about the ride. You can also sign up for the ride and turn in fundraising contributions at this pre-ride party.

Start your Summer Planning
Summer events are already rolling in to our calendar! I'm excited to see a lot of the favorites returning - and lots of new events too. No, we're not in the clear from the rain just yet, but that doesn't mean you can't start planning your summer fun now! There is no shortage of rides in Oregon and there will be days when you have to decide which event to do. In fact, if you are ambitious you can head out to something every weekend this summer.
Check out this cool event, the Urban Assault Ride on May 25, from New Belgium Brewing:
The Urban Assault Ride is funky bike scavenger hunt that involves street smart riding, obstacle courses, and a huge after party. Mental muscle is just as important as bike skills as teams of two choose their own course to checkpoints around the city.
The event is well known for its checkpoint obstacle courses where physical and mental obstacle courses must be completed before moving on. Kinda like American Gladiators with a demented cycling twist. Some checkpoints are listed prior to the event, others must be found during the event.
Participants can be 7 - 100 years - anybody can do it. Teams will ride a total distance of 20-25 miles (depending on the city). The first team to hit all of the checkpoint and cross the finish line wins! Then the party begins with free New Belgium beer and lots more two-wheeled shenanigans!

The Best Worst Day!
It's the end of a long, rewarding day - but I'm just stopping in quickly to report that today's Worst Day of the Year Ride was the best it has ever been. Sure, it rained a little in the morning, but that was at about 6:00am, well before riders started queuing up. So as for that record of sunny skies every year except a little rain at the end for the course last year? It held true! The sun came out during the finish line just as everyone was enjoying 100% scrumptious chili and potato corn chowder provided by Laughing Planet. Seriously, I've never tasted bike ride food like that before (except maybe the gourmet finish line at the Portland Century, but that ride is in a league of it's own).
Over 2,000 riders showed up, cruised the city streets, drank hot drinks along the way and, perhaps most importantly, strutted their stuff in outrageous costumes. Maybe the exclusively-designed limited edition Worst Day of the Year Ride reflector from Fun Reflectors, a prize for costumed riders, was an incentive. But I doubt it. These gussied up folks were in it to win it - prizes or not.
What's that? You didn't make it out there for the ride today? You're crazy. You must go next year. You must.
Photos and more info to come.

The Hottest Worst Day
The Worst Day of the Year Ride is sold out! Last year there were 1,500 riders and this year they capped the ride at 2,000 riders. The event it not until this Sunday, but last night at midnight they hit that 2,000 mark.
Congratulations to those of you who are going on this incredible wintertime adventure! Be sure to write back to us and let us know how it goes. We want to hear all about that yummy food, especially the finish line by Laughing Planet Cafe. I heard they've been hard at work in their kitchen all week preparing the made-from-scratch soup and chili for the masses.
So if the ride is full up how do you still get in? There are a limited number of volunteer positions available. See the website for details.

Sunday's Weather Report
This Sunday is the Worst Day of the Year Ride in Portland. Will we actually see the worst weather? Uhhh, I doubt it. Though the ride was formed around the actual worst day of the year in Oregon weather, the past six rides have been graced with sunny skies and mild weather. It is sort of looking like this year might be no different (predictions of only a 30% chance of rain and 50 degrees).
The ride is almost sold out and online registration closes tonight. If online registration does not sell out, registration will also be available at Packet Pickup Saturday (4-7 at Lucky Lab on Hawthorne) or at the start line.
>> REGISTER NOW
So what happened when the organizers decided to start the Worst Day's sister ride, the Hottest Day of the Year Ride? Yup, you guessed it, cold weather and pouring down rain - in early August. Go figure.
Are you riding this Sunday? What are you most looking forward to?

NAHBS Brings on the Fun
This weekend is the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, a touring show that visits a different city every year. Portland is hell-bent on ensuring the out-of-towners see the very best that Portland has to offer so on top of the convention's after-parties, Portlanders have organized additional activities. The most comprehensive list of what's happening when during this jam-packed weekend is on the BikePortland.org website. See details here.
There will be workshops for builders, casual riders and competitive riders. Maybe you want to catch the alley cat on Saturday. Maybe you're riding the not-to-be-missed Worst Day of the Year Ride on Sunday. Or you can just spend all day geeking out and freaking out on some of the world's most beautifully-constructed bikes. See? Plenty to do.
You can read more about NAHBS in the most recent ORbike newsletter. By the way, if you're not receiving our newsletter, you should be. Sign up through the front page of our website.

Rider Profile: Gus Fant
Gus Fant is riding in the Worst Day of the Year Ride, but says that a little rain won't scare him off. "I ride in the rain," he says, " because if you don't you won't get much riding in." And Gus knows all about getting riding in - he usually clocks about 3,000 miles per year, and aims for 4,000.
Still, it's no small feat for Gus to be riding in the Worst Day of the Year Ride. This 65 year old is a member of the Tacoma Wheelmen Bicycle Club and he'll be coming down from Tacoma for the ride. Several of the other club members will also be riding.
Gus is a veteran Worst Day of the Year Rider: he has been on five rides. So why does he love it? "It is probably the most social ride I experience during the year," he says. "With the frequent stops on the Worst Day of the Year Ride find it rather relaxing to just take my time and enjoy the ride and visit with riders. Also I take pleasure in supporting the Community Cycling Center as I strongly believe in what they are all about."
One of his favorite aspects of the ride is seeing parents and kids riding together. "I also enjoy seeing other beginning cyclists who express their doubts about completing the ride at the start and then when you see them at the finish line the joy they show from completing the ride."
Speaking of the finish line, what's it gonna be for Gus with he hits those yummy Laughing Planet Cafe soup options? "I'm just not sure although I'm kind of partial towards chili."
Registration closes at midnight on February 7th but the ride will sell out at 2,000 riders. Don't miss out, sign up now!

Worst?? Day of the Year Ride
It's really cold out this morning, which has us thinking a lot about the Worst Day of the Year Ride, the annual benefit for the Community Cycling Center. Did you know that in the six years of the ride, it has never rained once? Well, last year there was a little sprinkle at the end, but other than that the quirky, urban, February ride has been graced with sunny, warm skies every year.
You'll be kept warm and comfy at every turn with tons of belly-nourishing treats including hot cocoa, doughnuts, fruit, DragonFly chai tea, Nossa Familia coffee, bagels, hot cider and much more. The finish line meal is presented by Laughing Planet Café, experts in wholesome yumminess, and features local, sustainable and organic soups and fresh focaccia bread.
Want more of a challenge? The optional 40-mile route loop traverses the west hills out to Hillsboro.

SS Pussycat : The Fountain Ride
The SS Pussycat is an annual Portland alley cat open to women and transgendered riders only. The ride meets at the Jamison Square Fountain at noon on Saturday. It's not just about speed, racers can also opt to be judged on their spirit (and take an entirely different course). Costumes are encouraged for this approx. two-hour ride. Prizes this year are awesome and include a four hour frame building workshop with Sacha White of Vanilla Bicycles for the winner and a friend, a full bicycle fitting from Michael Sylvester of Bicycle Fitting Services, a Chris King headset, a Timbuk2 messenger bag from Team Estogen, Deller Designs cycling hats and more. The organizers are hoping to award a prize to just about every participant.
Admission is $5 plus, curiously, a plastic water bottle that racers will need for some of the on-course challenges. If you're a trans rider, Veloshop will comp your entry.
Sounds like tons of fun to watch or race. Men are encourage to come watch, cheer and volunteer. For more info, contact Bethany Berson, postbethany [at] hotmail.com .

Rider Profile: Stasia Honnold // 100
Car-free cyclist ("Have never owned one, never will," she says) Stasia Honnold is one of the brave souls who has signed up for the full century on the Portland Century, but she's not intimidated by all those miles. "I end up bike commuting anywhere from 20-40 miles a day, depending on how many stops and random side trips I take, so if I'm going to do a recreational ride I basically want to go as far as possible to make it interesting. I also did the 100 miles last year and it rocked. There's nothing like a hundred miles to make you feel like you really earned the post-ride dinner!"
Stasia, a seventh grade English teacher, is exited to return her second Portland Century. "My favorite part of these rides is meeting all the other awesome people out there. I love to find people going my pace. There's something about the fact that you're both biking that makes it easier than ever to strike up a conversation with a stranger."
Stasia says her favorite place to take a long ride is the Gorge, and last weekend she tackled Larch Mountain. She also loves riding through Riverview Cemetery, on the 205 path to Marine Drive and through Washington Park. "But really," she say, "as long as I'm on a bike I'm happy."
Stasia likes that the Portland Century is all about Portland. "I really, really, really like how normal it is to bike here, and how easy. I love that I can tell people I don't have a car and they think it's admirable, not absolutely crazy. I love Portland's continuous work to make the city accessible by and safe for alternative transportation, whether it's bike, bus, max, whatever. And unrelatedly, I love how people care about things being local and organic. Yay for conscious living!"
If you're not yet signed up, you can still sign up online, at Saturday's pre-ride check in, or at the event on Sunday. For more info, see the Portland Century website.

Hottest Day Ride Attempts Largest Water Fight
Hop on your bike, ride with friends, eat some snacks along the way, but hurry back to the finish line because that's where all the action is, or so it seems (the ride is pretty great too). The Hottest Day of the Year Ride is a benefit for the Community Cycling Center and the organizers are going for the largest water fight on record. There will be free squirt guns (no outside guns or soakers allowed) and plenty of room outside the Lucky Lab on Quimby. There is a also a "No Squirt" zone of people who are grouches - or just don't want to get wet. The record is 1,120 and last year they had 900.
The finish line also features a make-your-own sundae station with tons of toppings to make it just right. This fun ride is an easy, flat, urban 15 miles and there is also an extended 40-mile route.

Bike to Reunite: A Scavenger Hunt on Wheels
The Pangaea Project is a leadership development program that empowers low-income youth to become local community leaders with global perspectives. This year, 10 students have joined the program to study and work on housing and homelessness issues in Portland and in Ecuador. In Portland they will partner with and learn from leaders of Street Roots, Dignity Village and Sisters of the Road. In July, they will travel in Ecaudor from the mountains to the coast to the cities to the Amazon rainforest, where they will participate in community-service projects and meet with community leaders, government officials and inspiring change-makers.
It's a great project and here's a great way to be involved, while riding your bike. They are having a scavenger hunt bike ride on Saturday, June 16th. Registration is at 9:00am at the corner of NE MLK Jr. Blvd. and NE Graham, across from Venue Restaurant (formerly Billy Reed's).
Every rider must raise a minimum of $100 in donations in order to participate. The organizers suggesting asking around for $5 each from friends, coworkers and family. They have an online donation option which makes it easy for people to contribute.
The ride rounds out with presentations from the students and eating and drinking at County Cork in NE Portland.

At 6:15 people will gather, meet other riders and deocrate bikes. The parade leaves at 7:00.
The short route will wind around downtown with a police escort guiding riders safely through intersections. This is a very family friendly ride open to riders of all ages.

No Shortage of Events
Well, there is certainly no shortage of rides in our state these days. Recently, the Tour of Flanders had over 100 people turn out for a super hardcore race on some of the steepest roads in Portland. This event was anonymously organized and described as "brutal", but the route was made very public in advance. It got people all excited. They came out in droves, even though it was rainy. Read more on BikePortland.org. You can also watch a video here.
Every week there's an alley cat race, a training ride, a quirky fun ride or a solidly organized ride. There's so much to do that you have absolutely no excuse to be stuck inside! Check out our calendar. We're adding new events to it every week.

Incredible Weather Across Oregon!
Wow, what gorgeous weather! Team ORbike member Porter is on his way to Hawaii and we're wondering why. As I type this, the weather across the state is out-of-control-amazing:
* Salem: 63
* Ashland: 73
* Oakridge (home of Mt. Bike Oregon): 72
* Klamath Falls: 68
* Bend: 66
* Portland: 72
* Pendleton: 59
* Corvalls (home of the new Reach the Beach start): 62
Good weather means great riding. What ride are you going to take today or this weekend?
By the way, this is an image from Mt. Bike Oregon, one of the more open, lovely trails that's in the mix along with hardcore singletrack and forested climbing.

Best Worst Day Ride
The Worst Day of the Year Ride pretty much turned out to the best it has ever been. 1,500 cyclist came out for the day, and the event was sold out. The sun was shining and it was warm, but for about a half our some light rain came down just to remind riders they were in Portland.
Riders were sent out on course with cameras! They got some really fun shots of their friends and other riders, the scenery and the rest stops. Check out the photo gallery and see just how quirky this ride really is. See also the Weather Report, the event ride report and newsletter.

Oregon is all a-buzz with excitement in preparation for the Worst Day of the Year Ride, a benefit for the Community Cycling Center. Worst?? Day of the Year Ride
It has become a great Portland joke: The Worst Day of the Year Ride happens on what should be the worst day of the year, but hasn't been since the ride started. Oh sure, one year there was hail, but that was only after all the riders left - but the cleanup crew was still trying to haul boxes into the trucks. So it's cute, the coincidence that this ride is always on a nice day - but will it happen again this year?
The ride's resident meteorologist, the Icy Monkey, is predicting great weather. He also consulted with the Farmer's Almanac, which forecasts drier but colder weather. I think we'll all just have to head out that day and see for ourselves! But if you're not registered yet, do it right away. The limited 1,500 rider slots are filling up quickly. This event will sell out.

Organized Rides go Holiday
I'm a sucker for the holidays, so it's no surprise I get all excited at the thought of Elliot and company flying across the sky with presents in their baskets instead of ET. That's the redesigned Night Ride logo made special for the holidays. Several of our area's oreganized rides transformed their logos to send out with special volunteer holiday cards.
I mean, come on, a guy holding his bike over his head, wearing a Santa hat, and his wheels are wreaths? That's good stuff. Check out the collection. Click the images for larger versions.

800 Riders - 1,000 Sundaes
The first-ever Hottest Day of the Year Ridewas a sweltering success! 800 riders turned out for a very sunny Sunday afternoon. The route was a hot but rewarding 15 miles around North and NE Portland, with a 40-mile loop route for people who wanted more of a challenge. The ride offered a chance to check out lesser-known routes like Bryant Street (one of my favorite E-W streets to the north), the Going Street bike/ped bridge and Gertz for the 40-milers (a great way to connect to Marine Dr. while the 33rd bridge is down). One rider told the 40-miler was "Just the best circuitous route around Portland."
The water fight was awesome, with riders of all ages squirting each other. There was also a finish line sprinkler to cool riders off as they entered the party. Were you on the ride? What did you think?
Check out these great links, one of which is Jonathan Maus' report and photos posted on BikePortland.org.

Freak Snowstorms Predicted!
Well, not really, but with the great weather that happens every year for the Worst Day of the Year Ride, you just never know what will happen on tomorrow's Hottest Day of the Year Ride. In fact, it's the first year for the ride so we're not at all sure what to expect. Registration has been really good and tons of people are heading out to the Lucky Lab Brew Hall (NW 19th and Quimby) for a fun ride in support of the Community Cycling Center.
You can register at the start line for only $30, which is an awesome deal considering a portion of the proceeds goes to the CCC and all that you get with the ride (read below).
There's the standard 15-mile option but also a 40-miler for those who want a little more of a challenge. The day rounds off with a HUGE water fight at the finish line and a make-your-own sundae bar. Rest stops along the way will keep you well hydrated and fueled with snacks. Head on out, check it out.

Who's Riding on Hot Days?
Do you have to be crazy to sign up for a ride called the Hottest Day of the Year Ride? Well, 1,500 people signed up for the Worst Day of the Year Ride this year, so the hottest has got to be pretty great also right? That's what 29 year old Carrie Bader thinks and she's pumped to ride.
Carrie says, "I always like to take advantage of any good organized outdoor events during the summer - I also don't bike much outside of my usual commute, so it's a chance to get out and try a new route." She says that for sure she's really looking forward to the post-ride water fight and ice cream sundaes.
Carrie's regular riding mostly includes her 10-miles-a-day commute to work or school. This summer she also rode the Tour d'Organics in June on the 30-mile route.
Carrie is one of hundreds of people who are signing up for the Hottest Day of the Year Ride - a benefit for the Community Cycling Center. Tons of volunteers will ensure there aren't long lines - to check in or to make your ice cream sundae at the finish line. If the weather is anything line today, it won't be the hottest, but it will be one of the best days to ride.

Hottest Day of the Year Ride
I think tomorrow may be the hottest day yet, but you've still got time to gear up for the Hottest Day of the Year Ride on August 6. Hhundreds of cyclists will brave the heat on a soaking, cycling, sundae, Sunday ride in support of the Community Cycling Center. The mostly flat, 15-mile loop route starts and ends at the Lucky Lab Brew Hall, NW 19th and Quimby and features a finish line sundae making party, BBQ and the West's largest water fight (squirt guns provided).
The meandering 15-mile course is flat and perfect for new or experienced riders. A water and snack-stocked rest stop will provide shade and respite along the way. There is also a 40-mile option for hardcore riders who want more of a challenge.

Oregon Bike Events are Growing
There seems to be no shortage of great Bike events happening in Oregon this summer and most have seen their numbers grow. The Barlow Trail Century, in it's third year, experienced huge growth on one of the hottest days to hit summer. The Night Ride last Saturday was off the hook. Tons of riders are already signing up for the brand new Portland Century and Mt. Bike Oregon is poised to sell out.
For our loyal readers in Eugene, don't miss out on , a weekend of bike-themed films at the DIVA center.

The Night Ride - a Huge Success!
By all accounts, The Night Ride on Saturday night was a huge success! Many other large (and larger) cities have great night rides, and we really wanted to see one in Portland. The old night ride was laid to rest and this new, improved ride was wildly popular. Costumed riders were everywhere. I was really impressed with some of the get-ups (riders dressed as dice!) It was clear people were having fun and had put a lot of time into their outfits. I was especially loving all the coordinated group costumes (the nurses!)

Be Seen at Night - on The Night Ride!
If you're riding at night and you're the light hearted type, you just might fall in love with Magnet Spotz. These highly reflective helmet accessories were created by Portlanders Colleen O’Hair and Julie Bessie. Last year the women purchased bicycles and began searching for fun, reflective accessories to add to them. They found some products but nothing that made them laugh while visible and safe. When Colleen and Julie headed out to a night ride, they knew it was time to come up with something special, and Magnet Spotz were created.
Magnet Spotz will make a special appearance at The Night Ride on July 8th (a benefit for the BTA). Riders with the very best costumes and decorated bikes will be awarded a free design. Come dressed to impress!

Barlow Trail Rider Profile: Christy Evans
River City's Barlow Trail Century is the hotly anticipated event of the season. With this awesome route, I can see why:
The 40 & 100 mile adventures begin on a unique rails-to-trails bike path. The route also features rural country roads then lead to an exhilarating descent down to Dodge Park and the Sandy River, a short but stiff climb up to Roslyn Lake Park, a blazing descent and drop into "Little Switzerland", lush green pasturelands of the upper Sandy River valley, the freshly paved Barlow Trail Road and Lolo Pass Road - the gateway to the Mt. Hood Wilderness Area where the real climbing begins.
Christy Evans is one of the riders this year. As soon as she heard what a great ride it is, she signed right up. "I moved here last year from the east and am really enjoying the scenery in Oregon - and what better way to see the state than to do the rides."
Chrisy got her cycling start doing triathlons and was very active in the long distance (Ironman) events for years, so it's no surprise that the Lolo Pass climb is what she's most looking forward to on the Barlow. Christy considers her other events of the season, such as Monster Cookie and Reach the Beach, to be merely "joy rides".
Christy lives in Hillsboro where she has great terrain available and can ride flats or hills, or a combination, right out her front door. She also enjoys riding with the Aloha Bike Club to Bald Creek, Grabhorn andother areas.
So what draws Chrisy to cycling? She says it's really the outdoors experience, and that cycling, once you get out there, is free.
Look for Christy out there on the Barlow Trail Century, crushing the hills and taking in the sites along the beautiful route.

The Night Ride
Nighttime riding in Portland just got a little more interesting! Come over to the dark ride and take a moon-lit urban bicycle adventure through Portland on The Night Ride, a 2,000 person benefit bicycle ride on Saturday, July 8th, 2006 starting at 8:00 pm from the train station. The mostly flat, 15-mile street ride takes you past hootin' and hollerin' night life and fire jugglers, through a disco party rest stop and along spectacular cityscape views to an all-you-can-eat midnight doughnut finish line feast. The ride is sponsored by The Bike Gallery and is a benefit for the Bicycle Transportation Alliance.
A new surprise and mystery awaits you at every turn on The Night Ride. The well-marked course will guide you through the city on a riding adventure like no other. You're in the nighttime club, and recommended attire includes costumes and pajamas. There will be prizes for the best getup, so come dressed to impress. Free glow-necklaces for all riders.
This ride is perfect for new riders or longtime road warriors. Fire jugglers, bagpipes and drums - oh my! Daytime rides are for chumps, it's time for The Night Ride. Saddle up, you're going for a ride.
