Rider Profile: Hands on Portland Crew for Portland Century

August 11, 2009

In addition to celebrating the sights, sounds and tastes of Portland, cyclists at The Portland Century on August 16 will show their support for the local non-profit Hands On Greater Portland. As the beneficiary of the Portland Century, Hands On staff look forward to taking to two wheels and riding the 50 mile course.

"Just about everyone at Hands On is a biker, but we rarely get a chance to ride together. It will be great to roll together," says Hands On Executive Director, Andy Nelson. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, Portland is second in the nation for volunteering. When asked what makes Hands On a special part of Portland, Andy added, "Hands On has become synonymous with volunteering. We give Portlanders a way to get connected to volunteering in a way that is meaningful to them."

And with nearly 15,000 volunteer connections made between 2007 and 2008, Hands On certainly has a right to be celebrated. "For us, this event has been great. We appreciate the opportunity... the recognition. We're psyched for this year's ride!"

Hands On became the event's beneficiary after providing volunteer support to help get the event off the ground in year one. "We soon realized that volunteers love to bike!" Remembers Andy.

Join Andy and the rest of the team of Hands On staff riding this Sunday, August 16 - register today!
