Rider Profile: David Beltz
August 4, 2009
David Beltz has been hit hard by prostate cancer: too many of his close friends have it. One of his oldest friends who is suffering from prostate cancer asked him to find a way to link his favorite sport - cycling - to the cause. That's why David is participating in the PC Challenge option for the Portland Century. This new ride feature allows riders to participate in the incredible Portland Century while also raising support for prostate cancer research. "The Portland Century and PC Challenge adventure ride has become a major life goal for me," David says.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men though there is not a lot of research going into it. "The frequency of men contracting prostate cancer is so high and most people know little about it. My uncle died of it, my close friend has it, an in-law has it, and it may affect me as well," David says. David is looking forward to the ride offering him a chance to challenge himself "intellectually and physically to overcome the 100 miles of mountainous climbs to ride for the cure!"
David is developing a fundraising plan that encourages people he knows to sponsor him by the mile in support of the Knight Prostate Cancer Research Center at OHSU. "This good work connects us as brothers in the fight for the cure," David says.
