Not Scary: Fundraising for a Benefit Ride

Here's a little help for those of you who are riding Reach the Beach. I spoke with Jennifer Baldwin, the fundraising guru at the American Lung Association of Oregon, and she assured me fundraising isn't scary, it's simple. Here are the five tips she suggests that make it quick and easy to qualify for cool fundraising prizes (like the sold-out Cycle Oregon).
* Start by sending an e-mail to all of your friends. Tell them what you're doing and ask for their support.
* Don't be afraid to follow up with people who have said they will donate to your fundraising efforts. A quick reminder e-mail.
* Ask everyone to support your fundraising efforts. You never know who has been affected by lung disease.
* Include pictures: of you on your bike, of your loved one with a
lung disease, of you and your family. This reminds your supporters that it’s an important personal issue.
* Use the online fundraising system. These easy-to-use tools make it a snap to quickly meet - and exceed - your goal.

Getting people to send checks is easy; recording donations on the website is impossible. Maybe it's partly because I'm using the Safari browser with my Mac, but the link to record donations sends me everywhere but where it's supposed to and usually signs me out as well. I guess I'll have to bring the money the morning of.
This has been very frustrating.

Hi Ron,
I'm sorry to hear about your frustration! Unfortunately, Safari is a tricky browser that's just not compatible with a lot of websites. Most web site programmers program for Internet Explorer and Firefox. I am a Mac user and I highly recommend Firefox. It's a free, non-proprietary program and very reliable.
As for bringing your donations to the start line, NO PROBLEM! We have a full donation table and we're all set up to accept donations at the start lines. You'll still qualify for fundraising prizes and it is quick and easy.

I'm with the team on this one, I use Firefox exclusively and I am on a PC and it works great and I have not had any problems with the funds going in on the site.
