Greetings from Japan!
February 22, 2007
It may seem like I'm here, in Oregon, telling you about a bunch of cool bike stuff, but in reality in I'm Japan. I'm sure when I come back I'll have all sorts of interesting observances to share with you. I'm enjoying walking around the city and taking in the sites, and the bikes! I won't get much of a chance to ride when I'm here because I'm in Aomori where the streets are covered in snow and it's 20 degrees. How's the weather in Oregon?

How's the weather? I wish the streets were covered in snow and it was 20 degrees... You should've had the worst day of the year ride on this past Saturday. Ick. I think I've got a leaky basement.
Have fun in Japan. We miss ya!

Yes, raining and raining and raining. Some house even had it's deck slide away in NW because of the rain. but at the same time, i'm testing out the new rain pants i got this year, cause, you know, we haven't had a lot of rain so far...

From the night you left it has been non-stop bike fun. I just got done writing some info up and putting photos on flickr. There is a good one of this old lady you might recognize.

The weather here has been pretty lovely. It was nearly 50 in Tokyo. There are bikes EVERYWHERE. They call them a Mamma Chari because women (typically) ride them to carry the kids along (one or two kids, front and back). Men ride them too. And when it rains, they just hold an umberlla over their heads (no joke! but unfortunately I didn't get a picture of it).
In Aomori, the weather lightened up and I got to ride a Mamma Chari for a day! I had to doge a few snow mounds, but it was a sunny day and a great way to see the city.

I was in Japan about 4 years ago and I rode my bike everywhere. But I left behind the Lycra and rushing around. I noticed that no one rode special clothes and they rode very slowly. Most of the bikes were singlespeeds and people just took their time.
Of course, I came back to Eugene, geared back up and kept racing to get places, but I still thinking about how great it was to ride in Japan.
