A Snowy Commute
January 16, 2007
It's 8:20 am and there are still no car tracks on my sleepy NE Portland street. The street is a pure sheet of white. It makes me wonder if I'll see the yellow-clad cyclist who make is way past my house every day like clockwork.
Did you commute by bike in the snow? How was your ride?

I almost didn't ride, but then I thought about that ice storm we had that one year and how eventually I was out there on my bike. So this time I decided to just jump right into it. I don't think this weather's going to be around as long, so I didn't want to waste a rare snow bike opportunity!
I bundled up and went. Luckily I only had 2 miles to go today. It was invigorrating and fun. I rode pretty cautiously, but it wasn't icy anyway. People were certainly giving me some looks - but I think they were mostly trying to be supportive!

I agree, cars were slow. And I like to think it wasn't just because of the snow. I like to think that they were being cautious around me. A few drivers even gave me a nice wave or a thumbs up. And other bikers definitely send some nodding or smiling in my direction, as I did it back to them.

I have a snow day, but I rode a couple miles to get some breakfast, and it was the most fun I've had in a long time. Lots of slipping, but no falling, lots of friendly banter from pedestrians and motorists and other bicyclists, and the snow dampens all the noise. It was fun too to watch the snow accumulate on my bike seat while I drank coffee. Maybe my fat tires helped -- I didn't try to go fast, I just enjoyed it.

I had a nice, fresh, cold, brisk, SLOOOOW ride this morning. 5 miles mostly down hill so I had to be very careful. Lots of slipping, as everyone else says, but it was fun. I wonder what it will be like at the end of the day when I've got to go home. Do I brave it or jump on the bus?

A nice snowy day, and I chickened out. Reading all of your stories makes me jealous! You are all an inspiration - especially those of you who who get up so early.
Fun days in Portland!

Also chickened out, but mostly because I left the battery to my bike light at work (the BRIGHT light that I use to actually see, as opposed to letting cars know I'm around). Hard to ride parts of the Springwater with no light, though I probably would have been fine once the snow got deep enough - much easier to see a white road than a dark gray one. ;-)

The ride there = great.
The ride home = terrible.
Would I do it again = absolutely.

I didn't ride yesterday, but I'm on my way to a meeting this afternoon and I'm definitely riding. I'm looking forward to it - especially after reading the great stories you all posted.
Have fun out there, all you bikers!

What can be done for more Tire traction? Knobby tires are an obvious choice, but I don't have those because I'm pure road. I heard that some guy used zip ties, in between spokes, around the tire, but what about the brake hitting those? Can't be good.
I'm all for biking in the snow, but I just can't seem to stay upright!
