Organized Rides go Holiday
I'm a sucker for the holidays, so it's no surprise I get all excited at the thought of Elliot and company flying across the sky with presents in their baskets instead of ET. That's the redesigned Night Ride logo made special for the holidays. Several of our area's oreganized rides transformed their logos to send out with special volunteer holiday cards.
I mean, come on, a guy holding his bike over his head, wearing a Santa hat, and his wheels are wreaths? That's good stuff. Check out the collection. Click the images for larger versions.

A Fixie Music Video
Sit back, relax, and enjoy a bizarre fixie music video by RIP SLYME. This Japanese boy-band really likes their bikes. And when, at the end of the video, they build a bike for the entire band, they're even wearing helmets.

Mt. Bike Oregon is Open - the Internet Goes Crazy
The regional forums on the MTBR.com website are always abuzz with the latest and greatest area mountain biking news. So perhaps it's no surprise the North Cali (where about 35% of last year riders live) forum is going crazy over yesterday's announcement that Mt. Bike Oregon registration is open for 2007.
The poster LemurianGuy says "Wow, I'm def. in. Would like to know when the rest of you guys are going, preferably. I'm thinkn July, but not positive yet. Def down to go, though! Maybe I'll try an ellsworth, see if all the fluff really pans out..."
85% of last year's riders at the sold-out event said they were planning to return with friends and riding buddies this year, so this year there are two weekends (July and August). There will also be trails, more shuttles, more food and more exhibitors. The price will go up in April and this event will likely sell out, so register early!

Great Glove Suggestions
Last year, we did a little cyclist research. We asked real riders who ride every day what gloves they wear in the winter. We compiled the results here on the ORbike blog. 25 of you wrote in with your ideas. Read them all here. My favorites are the Pearl Izumi Amphibs - pictured here. I'm still rockin them (but not on nice days like today!) and they're great.

BikeCraft - Tonight
BikeCraft is the bike-lover's holiday gift bazaar that showcases local, handmade, bike-themed arts, crafts, films, music and more. Last year the event debuted at a coffee shop and the room was absolutely packed, so organizer Jonathan Maus has moved it to a larger venue - the main floor of the City Hall (1221 SW 4th Ave). Vendors include furniture fabricator Matt Cartwright, wool bike cap creator Shaun Deller, functional bike-adorned pottery makers James and Amy DeRosso and components manufacturer Chris King unveiling a new, unique catalog for 2007. Live music by the Trash Mountain Boys. The event goes from 4-8:00 pm.

Bike Rides as Gift Certificates!
What a great idea! Give your friends and loved ones free passes to organized rides. This guarantees you'll have all your favorite people along for the ride, and it's a unique, healthy gift. The Worst Day of the Year Ride (Feb 11) is offering a gift certificate option. They'll even send the gift certificate directly to the recipient, if you want. The ride has all sorts of new features this year, including a packet pickup the night before at the Lucky Lab. You can grab your rider number so you don't have to check in the next morning, and grab a beer while you're there.
Reach the Beach (May 19) is offering a similar program and they've also got a special $65 holiday price, which also covers the $50 fundraising requirement. Click on the RTB Store link.

See & Be Seen
The City of Portland's new See & Be Seen has gotten a lot of attention lately. Last Thursday they held a bike parade on Alberta street during the nighttime Last Thursday art walk. The program, inspired by a program in Germany, aims to encourage cyclists to be well lit and for motorists to use extra caution when driving at night.
On the KBOO Bike Show, the bicycle-oriented radio program I help host, one of the most frequent comments we get is from drivers who simply cannot see cyclists at night. Not all cyclists are unlit; many have inadequate lighting from dying batteries or poor-quality lights.
This is a particularly important time of year to be well lit since we're dealing with longer darkness hours. Tomorrow on the KBOO Bike Show, we'll talk with Linda Ginenthal from the City about this new prgram. The program airs live on the radio (90.7fm in the Portland area) or on the internet (kboo.fm) from 9-10 am. You can also find it podcast later that afternoon on Portland Transport.

Map Tool to Find Bike Shops and Clubs
MapMuse’s goal is to help people find places related to their interests. MapMuse continues to add new topics of interest each week. About 6 months ago they began a project to map bike shops and clubs across the US. According to the organizers, "Since this project was started, the public has made hundreds of additions and enhancements to these maps. We now have one of the most comprehensive databases of bicycle shops and cycling clubs in the US." Oregon's a little lacking, but maybe that will change...

New Changes for the Cherry Pie
The Cherry Pie Road Race is an annual tradition from the good folks at OBRA and Flying Puppy Racing. Along with the Worst Day of the Year Ride, it's one of those very early in the season bike events: Feb 18th. This year's ride will features a few new changes, based on rider feedback.
Here's what organizer's Jim and Heather have to report:
Hey everyone,
Here are a list of the changes to date:
1.) Include Masters 4 50+ with the Masters 5 50+. I think this will happen.
2.) Include a fixie cat. This one is tougher, but I'm working on it. We already have 6 races in the AM and 6 in the PM. Things are getting pretty full. Stay tuned.
3.) Have the Women 1/2/3 race the two laps (52 miles). I would also have the Women 40+ race the same length. How do the ladies feel about this?
If there are other requests, please get them to Heather and me so we can figure out if they are doable.
Regards,
Jim and Heather
