How Bad is Bad? How Steep is Steep?

August 24, 2006

The number one question for the Portland Century has been "Just how severe is that severe climbing arond Roslyn Lake?" The elevation maps are finally complete and you can view a mile-by-mile guide here. This section of the course incorporates elements of the Torture 10,000, an anual ride known for it's extreme climbing.

We've definitely set up a challenging course, but it's gorgeous out there and an opportunity to head out to the Bull Run area, the source of Portland's drinking water. Speaking of water, there are two water spots in that area, one at the peak of the first climbing and another after the next section of climbing. Details are on the elevation maps.

So... is that elevation map in feet? if so, seems like a bunch less climbing than some of the other centuries. And I'm grateful for tha! I really want to try for a century this summer, but I know I can't handle the 6000 feet of vertical on stuff like the LiveStrong ride.

There might be hope for me!

Hi Angelica,

That's the elevation from last year. This year is more hilly, but the elevation maps are not yet available. The overwhelming majority of the ride is very flat, but the climb out of Eagle Fern Park (rest stop) has some long, steep climbs. There's a new map of the route up on the website and elevation will be available shortly.

Last year we went out of our way to let people know how steep the climbing was, but most people said it wasn't as bad as they thought it would be We think the gorgeous views are well worth it!
