Bike Gallery's Commute Clinic / BikeWinter

December 01, 2005

I remember the first time I rode in the rain in Portland and wasn't totally hating it. I had just crossed the Broadway Bridge heading downtown. Dusk was creeping up on me and I was fully suited up for the weather. As I decended the hill toward the post office, I looked over and saw about 10 other random bikers heading east-bound. And it just clicked - this isn't so bad, it feels really good to be out riding. I've been riding every day since.

Bike Gallery is hosting a bike commute clinic at their Hollywood store (5253 NE Sandy Blvd) tomorow at 6 p.m. If you're new to commuting and haven't ridden in the winter, this one's for you! And for you die-hards who have friends who don't winter-ride, this is your chance to help them catch the fever!

Topics include:
- bike commute safety tips,
- recommendations on commuter bikes and accessories,
- dressing for all-weather commuting,
- commuter bike maintenance, and
- rules of the road.

Both novice and seasoned bike commuters are welcome. Expect plenty of "show-and-tell" of all the cool gear available to make your commute fun, comfortable and safe.

And to top it off they will serve yummy hot cider.

Speaking of winter riding, we don't have it so bad. In Chicago, it gets so terrible that bike enthuiasts created the popular BikeWinter movement to keep fellow riders motivated through the freeze-your-rear-off midwest winters. Now that's gutsy!
